Microsoft Collects Info On Anything With WiFi And Exposes The Info On The Web…. WTF?

Posted in Commentary with tags , , on July 31, 2011 by itnerd

Microsoft really hasn’t done itself any favors this time. The news has hit the Interwebs that Microsoft has collected the locations of millions of laptops, cell phones, and access points all over planet earth. They then apparently make this data publicly available through Live.com with little regard to the privacy concerns. How does that compare with others who collect this sort of data?:

Unlike Google and Skyhook Wireless, which have compiled similar lists of these unique Wi-Fi addresses, Microsoft has not taken any measures to curb access to its database. Google tightened controls last month in response to a June 15 CNET article, and Skyhook uses a limited form of geolocation to protect privacy.

Lovely. It makes me loathe Microsoft even more than I already do. How did Microsoft get this data?:

Microsoft assembled the database through crowdsourced data gathering from Windows Phone 7 devices and through what it calls “managed driving” by Street View-like vehicles that record Wi-Fi signals accessible from public roads. Its Web interface is, the company says, intended to provide “search results, weather, movie times, maps and directions based on a device’s current location.”

Sneaky. When asked about this, here’s what Microsoft had to say:

Reid Kuhn, a program manger with Microsoft’s Windows Phone Engineering Team, sent CNET this statement: “To provide location-based services, Microsoft collects publicly broadcast cell tower IDs and MAC addresses of Wi-Fi access points via both user devices and managed driving. If a user chooses to use their smartphone or mobile device as a Wi-Fi access point, their MAC address may also be included as a part of our service. However, since mobile devices typically move from one place to another they are not helpful in providing location. Once we determine that a device is not in a fixed location, we remove it from our list of active MAC addresses.”

Microsoft did not, however, respond to questions whether its database includes only Wi-Fi devices acting as access points, or whether client devices using the networks have been swept in as well–something that Google did with its Street View cars. A May blog post touts “Transparency About Microsoft’s Practices,” but doesn’t provide details.

The privacy implications are huge. Someone can use this info to retrace your steps to see where you’ve been. All they’d need is your MAC address which is easy”ish” to get. Hackers could leverage that info as part of a larger attack. Scary isn’t it.
Sorry Microsoft. This is a #fail for you.

Russia Bans iPad For Govenment Use….. Playbook Is A-OK Though

Posted in Commentary with tags , , , on July 31, 2011 by itnerd

Here’s an interesting reversal of fortune. The Apple iPad is apparently verboten in Russian government circles due to security concerns. However, the Blackberry Playbook which hasn’t exactly set the world on fire is good to go because of the fact it has FIPS-140-2 certification:

If true, the backing of the Russian government could prove to be another victory for RIM as it seeks to use its reputation of prioritizing security technology to position the BlackBerry PlayBook as the tablet of choice for businesses and governments, the way it originally marketed its BlackBerry smartphones.

Seeing as RIM has had nothing but bad news lately, this is great news for them. Assuming that this is true of course. If it is, you have to expect that El Jobso is not a happy camper at the moment.

QuikView For iPad Hits The Street

Posted in Commentary with tags , , on July 26, 2011 by itnerd

A Canadian software developer called Zod Studios e-mailed me a press release this afternoon announcing an app for iPad called QuikView. Here’s what you need to know about it:

With QuikView your essentially creating your own personal news hub. You get to choose the content that you want, what the layout of that page will look like, and even how many pages you want to have. Instead of news apps limiting the content you look at, QuikView allows you to fully customize that information to meet your own needs. Unlike other apps out there, QuikView is all about viewing information at a glance. Being able to browse through various types of content with the flip of a finger.

The app currently comes with 3 data feeds to choose from including an RSS Reader, YouTube and Twitter. Zod Studios will be adding Facebook into the mix very soon along with many others once they begin getting feedback from their users. If you don’t want to wait for them to make a data feed don’t worry because soon they will also allow third party developers the ability to create their own. QuikView is now available on the App Store for $1.99.

Interesting Features
- stream video to your AppleTV while you browse articles on your iPad
- create multiple pages with custom layouts
- group YouTube subscriptions into categories
- watch/listen to YouTube and read articles at the same time

I have to admit that this sounds very interesting. I don’t have an iPad, but at $1.99, it sounds like it’s worth getting. Check it out on the app store here or see what it looks like 0n the Zod Studios website here.

RIM Slashes 11% Of Their Workforce… And More….

Posted in Commentary with tags on July 25, 2011 by itnerd

It’s got to be a scary time to be a RIM employee right now. That’s because the news is out that RIM is going to axe 2000 jobs or about 11% of their workforce:

“The work force reduction is believed to be a prudent and necessary step for the long term success of the company and it follows an extended period of rapid growth within the company whereby the work force had nearly quadrupled in the last five years alone,” RIM said in a statement.

Maybe, but it’s also meant to buy themselves time until RIM comes up with something that will blow the doors off smart phone users. There’s more:

In addition to the layoffs, RIM also announced a series of changes to its executive structure. For the most part, the changes entail giving a number of senior executives – although not co-CEOS Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie – more responsibilities. Chief operating officer (product and sales) Thorsten Heins will oversee all product engineering functions at the company. Chief information officer Robin Bienfait will also take on responsibility for the business enterprise unit. Chief operating officer (operations) Jim Rowan and chief financial officer Brian Bidulka will oversee the cost-cutting program.

I guess they need all the help they can get. Right now RIM seems like they’re a ship without a rudder. Which isn’t going to help them get back into the smart phone game. Assuming that they’re even still in the game.

Rogers Lights Up LTE Network In Ottawa

Posted in Commentary with tags on July 7, 2011 by itnerd

If you want your LTE and you live in Ottawa, today is your lucky day. Here’s what Rogers told me about their LTE launch:

Rogers launched Canada’s first LTE network and Ottawans are the first in Canada to experience it. This fall Rogers will roll out LTE to Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal with another 21 markets in 2012.

At launch, the first LTE device will be the LTE Rocket Stick. Later this year Rogers customers will be able to get their hands on the first LTE smartphones from HTC and Samsung.

If you want all the details, head over to Redboard and read the details. Here’s one important one:

At launch, the LTE Rocket stick will be capable of maximum theoretical download speeds of up to 75 Mbps on the Rogers LTE network. Typical download speeds can range from 12 Mbps to 25 Mbps. As device selection evolves, maximum theoretical download speeds will increase to up to 150 Mbps.

The only thing that they left out is what the caps are going to be as you know that there will be caps. But other than that, this is big news. Ottawa citizens are lucky dogs!

Fido Launches Share Your Care Campaign

Posted in Commentary with tags on July 7, 2011 by itnerd

I got an e-mail from Fido yesterday with some interesting news:

Today, Fido and Evergreen launched Fido Share Your Care which is a campaign to support local environmental and community projects. From July 5th to August 14th, Canadians are invited to vote through Facebook for their favourite project on the Share Your Care website.

Fido will share $100,000 among 20 different local projects across Canada. Each of the 20 projects will receive base support of $2,500 each and the remaining $50,000 will be distributed between the three projects which receive the most votes.

Canadians should take a look at www.shareyourcare.ca and take a look at what projects are in their area. It sounds very interesting and I’ll be talking a look at this campaign.
