Is Microsoft Planning Massive Layoffs? [UPDATED]

The economic slowdown must really be bad when rumors start flying that Microsoft is going to layoff as much as 17% of its workforce (or 15,000 employees) worldwide. News.com as well as Infopackets.com have posted stories on this topic and they have pointed to Jan. 15th as the date the axe will fall.

If you’re a Microsoft employee and you have some insight on this, please leave a comment and share your thoughts.

Now if Microsoft’s next move is to show up in front of congress to ask for bailout money, then we know that the universe is going straight to hell.

UPDATE: The Seattle Post-Intelligencer is reporting that “massive layoffs” are unlikely and any job shedding would come from contractors.
